About Tilehouse Counselling

Tilehouse Counselling is a charity that provides professional counselling in Hitchin and North Herts. We are a member with The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work strictly within their ethical framework. We offer a confidential service for young people aged 13 to 18 and affordable counselling for adults with income under £40,000. Proof of income may be required.

Our counselling centre is based in central Hitchin and has six comfortable, private counselling rooms. We have rooms that are wheelchair accessible.

Counselling can be short term or ongoing for up to a year. The counselling we provide is integrative, drawing on skills from psychodynamic, person-centred and cognitive behavioural methodologies. We are able to incorporate creative play techniques with our younger clients. Our counsellors are skilled at using psychodynamic principles such as facilitating self-exploration, examining emotional blind spots, identifying negative behaviour patterns and understanding complex relationships.

The evidence based research of The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) shows that counselling increases wellbeing because it explores the root causes for negative feelings. This in turn facilitates understanding and the capacity to move forward positively.

What we offer: We offer daytime and evening appointments during the week as follows:

  • Monday 9.00am - 8.00pm
  • Tuesday 9.00am - 8.00pm
  • Wednesday 10.00am - 8.00pm
  • Thursday 9.30am - 8.00pm

As a charity we are funded by grants from charitable trusts, contracts with statutory funders, contributions to the cost of counselling made by our adult clients, and from fundraising events. Details of current supporters appear in this link.

Counsellors: We have 12 fully qualified counsellors at our centre, each of whom is committed to ongoing professional development through external and internal training. Tilehouse requires counsellors to be experienced and BACP accredited practitioners. We have a rigorous selection process and retain counsellors for many years, providing consistency and a high quality of client care.
